WORKSHOP

Sustainable Water Technologies
in Industry

Tuesday 14 August
09:00-16:00, Folkets Hus, Room 204

Convenor: Stockholm International Water Institute (SIWI)
Co-Convenor: Water Environment Federation (WEF)

Many industries, especially in developing countries, still use old technologies which require lots of water, pollute the environment and with consequences on the socioeconomic development.  Introduction of new process technology or recirculation the process water enhance efficiency. In regions of water scarcity water harvesting methods can be used for collecting storm water. Social acceptance of such systems is often a key issue. Even if less water is used and pollution reduced, the released industrial water still requires treatment.  Treatment methods may be conventional methods, high tech, e.g. membrane techniques, or low tech such as ponds. The technique used depends on type of industry, whether it is in a big city or in a town, available water resources and the natural environment, socioeconomic conditions.

How can we convince the industry of the advantage to use water in a more efficient way?
How can stake holders at all levels in the water management process be involved? What is the role of information and education to stimulate introduction and use of sustainable water technologies in industry? How is awareness in small industry?

How can water be used in water scarce areas?
Which technologies can be used for water harvesting? Which storage capacities are required for industrial water requirements?

The role of advanced technologies in poor regions
Can advanced techniques such as reversed osmosis be used also in poor regions and in small systems, where, for instance, an abundance of solar energy is available? Other advanced technologies in poor areas?
