WORKSHOP 4

Preventive Action for Human Health

Water and sanitation are at the core of the public health concept of prevention – which from economic, social and managerial
perspectives is orders of magnitude better than a cure. Yet in terms
of policy and action, certain areas under the water/sanitation/health umbrella remain underdeveloped.

Four of these areas will be the focus of this workshop. Sanitation
has been in the shadow of efforts to expand drinking water supply
for decades but is finally emerging as an item in its own right,
largely in response to the MDG target. Water and sanitation in
specific settings is another topic gaining ground because of the
concrete opportunities to implement preventive action in schools,
health care centres and other “social” environments. Thinking
about drinking water safety, as well as about water quality issues
linked to the safety of recreational water and the use of wastewater
in agriculture, has undergone major changes with the health-based targets oriented risk assessment and management approaches promoted by WHO. Health impact assessment and public health management of water resources developments, including dams
and irrigation schemes, are now recognised as key public health approaches.

How can we translate these concepts into action? What are
the evidence gaps that need to be addressed? How can monitoring and evaluation efforts be mainstreamed for all water/sanitation related health issues in a common management format?
