WORKSHOP

Progress in Environmental Public Health

Thursday 16 August
08:30-17:00, Folkets Hus, Hall C

Convenor: Stockholm International Water Institute (SIWI)
Co-Convenors: World Health Organization (WHO) and DBL - Centre for Health Research and Development

Public health related to safe water and sanitation programmes but also to proper disposal of waste water and its use in agriculture. Health Impact Assessment and Risk Management may function as tools both for identification of factors impacting on public health and counteractive measures.

How can the impact on public health be measured and related to changes in water and land resources management?
Epidemiological surveys are the ultimate tool to demonstrate health impacts or benefits. Do prospective or comparative impact assessments have the same predictive value and will they enable identification and enforcement of changes in land and water management that would improve public health?

To what extent can the value of wastewater use be balanced with health impact?
Infrastructural changes, increasing demand, urbanisation, environmental impact and water scarcity necessitate a re-thinking in wastewater management and use. Water re-use will limit pressure on freshwater resources. If used in agriculture, it may result in an accumulation of heavy metals in soils and affect agricultural products and consumers’ health. How can the economic benefits of re-using of waste-water be tapped without negative impact for workers and consumers?

How can public health be integrated with sustainable environmental targets?
Lack of safe drinking water and vectors affect disease outcome. Water storage in dams and at the household level, for instance, relate to vector-borne disease transmission. We need to strike a balance between the need for storage and its potential negative impacts! How and with what tools?
