Water and Climate Day:
Clearing the Smoke in South East Asia
Wednesday 15 August
12:15-13:15, Folkets Hus, Lilla Teatern
Convenors: Wetlands International (WI), Cooperative Programme on Water and Climate (CPWC) and Netherlands Water Partnership (NWP)
The case for alternative peatland wise use practices based on improved water management and community engagement in Indonesian peatlands will be put to participants. A study by Delft Hydraulics and Wetlands International has shown that the degraded peatlands in South-east Asia contribute significantly to global climate change. South-east Asian deforested and drained peatlands cover 0.2% of the global land surface but conservative estimates show that they emit at least 2000 million tonnes of CO2 annually, an equivalent of at least 8% of the global fossil fuel emissions. Peatland degradation in SE Asia is directly linked to water management, particularly drainage, both for forestry (transport of logs) as well as for agriculture and agro-forestry purposes. In addition, millions of ha of peatlands have been deforested and drained without any successful follow-up development. A plenary discussion will be facilitated and opinion on the issue canvassed. |
