Comprehensive Assessment: Launch of the IWMI/WHO Brief on Irrigation and Health
Thursday 16 August
12:15-13:15, Folkets Hus, Room 204
Convenor: International Water Management Institute (IWMI) and the World Health Organiszation (WHO)
The Comprehensive Assessment of Water Management in Agriculture critically evaluates the experience of the past 50 years of water development, the water management challenges communities are facing today, and solutions people have developed. The results will enable better investment and management decisions in water and agriculture in the future.
Its extensive reference to the human health dimensions of irrigation has been summarised in a CA policy brief on Irrigation and Health. This brief will be launched in Stockholm, with presentations by IWMI and WHO staff. It touches on the nature and magnitude of the burden of ill-health related to irrigation, options for the domestic use of irrigation water, and the role of health impact assessment in planning and developing irrigation schemes.
Speakers at the side event will include Mr. Robert Bos (WHO), who will discuss the association between irrigation development and the burden of disease, and Dr. Peter McCornick (IWMI), who will introduce the Comprehensive Assessment's brief on health. |
