Going from Political Rhetoric to Anti-corruption Action in Water: What Will it Take?
Thursday 16 August
13:30-15:30, Folkets Hus, Hall A
Convenors: Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (Sida), Water Integrity Network (WIN), Stockholm International Water Institute (SIWI), IRC International Water and Sanitation Centre, Water and Sanitation Programme (WSP), Aquafed, IBON Foundation, United Nations Children’s Fond (UNICEF) and Transparency International (TI)
A recurring theme linked to the fight against corruption is the limited political will to deal with corruption and its detrimental effects. It is thus paramount to move from political rhetoric to concrete action. In this regard it is critical to continue to mobilise political support and engage leaders as constructive anti-corruption partners.
The seminar is aiming at making a contribution towards the transformation of political rhetoric to anti-corruption action. It will contribute to increased understanding of the diversity and scope of corruption in the water sector, especially concerning available tools and methodologies. A particular focus will be on linking anti-corruption to poverty reduction. Examples will be drawn from a wide variety of water usages (including water resources management, supply and sanitation and agriculture) as well as from different geographic and socio-economic contexts. The seminar will provide examples of existing knowledge of available tools to combat corruption as well as identify opportunities/obstacles (financial, organisational, capacity, political, etc.) to anti-corruption action in water. The seminar includes key-note presentations and a roundtable/panel debate.
Key issues that will be addressed include:
- Why is the international community so silent on the issue?
- What are the lessons learned from on-going anti-corruption activities?
- How can we better monitor integrity?
- How can we increase cooperation and coordination between ministries, sector institutions, water user groups, NGOs, donors etc?
- and above all, What is stopping us from taking more action?
