Addressing MDGs Through Exchange of Knowledge and Technology
Sunday 12 August
09:00-12:00, Folkets Hus, Room 204
Convenor: Northern Water Network (NoWNET)
Two important MDG targets are related to food security and water management:
- Reduce by half the proportion of people living on less than a dollar a day.
- Reduce by half the proportion of people who suffer from hunger.
Ensuring that there is sufficient water available for food production to serve the growing needs of society is a basic element of integrated water resources management.
The seminar will discuss how to ensure mutual cooperation and dialogue between North and South and how developing countries can take advantage of knowledge and technology generated in developed countries to ensure good water management practices. Specifically in the field of ensuring water for agriculture, this can lead to direct improvements in food production and food security.
At the seminar we will present some examples of water management in Northern countries that have had impacts on food production which may be relevant for developing countries, as well as creating new knowledge gained through cooperation with Southern partners. We will also discuss channels for exchange of both knowledge and technology for water management, realising that this process requires not only that the technology and the capacities to take advantage of the technology be available, but further requires socio-cultural adaptation.
The aim of this seminar is take one step towards developing a mechanism to stimulate the involvement of international stakeholders in knowledge exchange on the way to 2015.
