Event Description
The Joint Monitoring Report estimates that 320 million urban poor have no access to improved sanitation services. However, the actual number of urban poor without adequate access to appropriate sanitation services is estimated to be manifold. Providing sustainable sanitation services to the urban poor at scale entails a shift from simply seeing interventions as capital projects towards a systems approach that considers all elements required to provide sustainable and appropriate sanitation services. In addition, the key-note address will argue that the entire sanitation chain needs to be considered and that governance, finance, capacity building, finance, and technology are all critical to scaling up. In many cities, poor sanitation workers (manual scavengers) plug the holes in the failing sanitation chains.

There is a growing consensus that there is a need to move away from capital intensive and water consuming water-born sewerage. The case studies explore new pathways by presenting holistic approaches that have shown potential for scaling up. An interactive panel discussion will bring the key-note and case studies together by identifying ways forward.
