Event Description Experts from North America and Africa will highlight common transboundary lake basin management and governance issues. Policymakers, decision-makers and scientists will explore lessons learned from the 100 years of managing shared lakes in North America – including eutrophication, fisheries exploitation, exotic species introductions, toxic contamination, lake level fluctuations, hydro-electric development, climate change, recent attempts to update the water regulation regimes, the changing environment and advances in hydrology and will make comparisons between the North American and African lakes. A general governance and institutional framework for transboundary lake basin management will also be discussed.
Event objectives:
- A platform to share lessons learned in transboundary lake management on:
a. Institutional designs and public processes b. Bridging science and policy gap
- Common and emerging research-policy threads in the field of transboundary lake management
