Wednesday 20 August
Lunch Side Event
Convenors: Department of Water Affairs and Forestry, South Africa (DWAF) in collaboration with: European Union (EU), IRC International Water and Sanitation Centre andKPMG
South Africa made a presentation on Up scaling the delivery of Millennium Development Goals (MDG’S) through the Sector Wide Approach (SWAP) at the Africa San+5 conference held in Durban in February 2008. This conference was attended by forty countries to deliberate on issues surrounding sanitation delivery in the continent. The United Nations Secretary- General has expressed concern about the inability of man of the countries of Sub- Saharan Africa to meet the MDG targets. It cannot be business as usual if we are to upscale delivery.
The Sector Wide Approach Programme (SWAP) model developed by the World Bank and the European Union has been successfully applied in South Africa over the past eight years through the Masibambane Water Sector Support Programme. Working collaboratively with public, private, civil society sectors and donors, South Africa has met the MDG’D for halving water targets in 2001, and sanitation targets in 2008. The session aims to share these experiences and challenges to meeting the MDG’S in Southern Africa.
