Partnering with Business to Find Sanitation Solutions
Wednesday 20 August
Morning Seminar
Convenors: World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD), Stockholm International Water Institute (SIWI) and United Nations Development Programme (UNDP)
Sanitation is an essential component of a sustainable business environment.
Companies are directly affected by the impacts of poor sanitation on their employees, families and the local communities in which they operate. On a larger scale, the purchasing power of nearly half the world’s population is impaired by the direct and indirect effects of poor sanitation. This has a huge impact in reducing market potential.
Only by engaging multiple stakeholders will society as a whole be able to achieve the MDG target and more.
This session will explore the business case for sanitation, including wastewater management. It will challenge companies to reflect on how populations lacking basic sanitation overlap with their markets, operations and supply chains. How can business contribute in overcoming the enormous gap in access to improved sanitation solutions? Can sanitation itself be seen as a new business opportunity? How do company wastewater strategies contribute to sanitation solutions?
We will debate how international companies can a) take the lead in their operations, products and services, b) work with civil society and SMEs and c) interact with government.
This interactive session will include short stimulating presentations, followed by a one-hour discussion period in facilitated break-out groups.
