Responding to the Evidence? Aid and the Sanitation Blindspot
Sunday 17 August
Evening Side Event
Convenor : WaterAid
17:15-19:00 Room K16/17
The international aid system is failing to respond in a comprehensive or rational manner to the challenges of global poverty. There is strong evidence that sanitation is the single development intervention that brings the greatest public health returns and yet it remains the most off-track Millennium Development Goal Target. The potential for cost-effective, deep and far-reaching development outcomes are huge and yet the sanitation sector remains marginalised when development resources are allocated. This session will share the findings from WaterAid’s research, which exposes the mismatch between burden of disease and financial inputs and questions how the aid system can be made more responsive to areas of critical deprivation.
